Interview Tips for Insurance


Here is the article for both recruiters and job seekers as I think this is the only sector where I have seen candidates and consultants rushing behind each other, candidates are not getting jobs and recruiters are not getting candidates.
This article covers many profiles but mainly it is for the job seeker applying for the position of Sales Manager, with different names in different companies

Job in Insurance sector 75% depends only on one question though this is the nightmare for every interview (other then why you want to switch over) but here in the insurance this comprises the complete interview in itself “Introduce Yourself”. Either recruiter is screening you on phone or HR manager is taking your face to face interview other then few more questions you have to handle ‘your introduction’ as a small autobiography, one should keep the moto of the recruiter in the mind ‘what exactly he wants to know’. If it is a telephonic conversation then we have to give all information as per the recruiter needs in a calculative time. There is nothing new if I m discussing ‘introduce yourself’ here, as many articles talk about it, actually I want to make this topic more clear to you as per the consultant’s point of view


INTRODUCE YOURSELF –
Your introduction should include these questions in your mind when your are giving your interview.
Career History
What is the target assigned to you
How much you are able to achieve
What are your achievements
Your Last salary drawn
Your Last incentive achieved
What is your family background
Generally we include this information in our introduction but why, lets discuss it question wise
.
Career History
In this question recruiters want to know about your
(a)Total years of experience and How many companies you have changed in these years
Its not only for your exposure in the market, it’s to check how stable you are, as in the current trend companies are open only for a stable candidate, they don’t want a ‘job hopper’ in their organization, as I have already mentioned in my earlier posts, please don’t add list of the companies in your resume just to increase your experience, or to show your exposure in different verticals. It becomes a bottle neck in itself, other then reducing the stability factor now you have to justify the change of fields also.


Achievements
How many appraisals or awards or promotions you received in your current company as well as in your career history


Salary and Incentive-
What is the mode of incentive in your company (Monthly, Quarter, Yearly)
Both of these topics should be included in your introduction to show your performance, you target chasing abilities and your growth potentials.


Family background-
Generally family details are not very much noticed in the interview but in the insurance sector this information can help you a lot to impress the interviewer
So include these details about your family
(a)About your parents
(b)No. of sisters and brothers, are they settled or not
(c)Where are your parents and relatives settled
(d)You are married or single
(e)You have responsibilities of your family (if single)

All these points are important to give an idea about your social network as SM /Advisor or any person in insurance need to have very strong network, circle and relatives should be working on such positions where they can help the candidate to make a good team and get the business for the company.

Why I m asking to include about martial status and responsibilities, generally companies are not very much interested in young (20-25yrs candidate for sales manager other then those companies where freshers are hired for the entry level profiles like ASM/FO/FE) and single person who doesn’t have any responsibility to take care of.


Few more important points for the interview

1. Now a days companies have started taking persons who are either born and brought up in that specific location or at least living there not less then 8-10 yrs, so if you are living there from around 4-5 yrs then make sure that you can show your excellent social network in that city so as to give enough regular business to the company

2. Companies are preferring candidates maintaining four wheelers other then two wheelers, after your introduction some where add these two points in your interview

3. This is very important point in the current trend, carry a list of at least 50-100 persons from your circle those who can work as an Advisor/Insurance Consultant in your team, place this list in front of the interviewer in between your interview. This list should have Name, Contact Number, Job Profile, and remark about their social Circle, Personality and Earnings (with a rough idea)
These persons should be around 30years of age, with a good social network
Many candidates avoid to carry this list with them but this plays a important role to clear the first round interview

4.Sometimes it is the second round of the companies in which they ask to carry this list (discussed above)or some (around 5-10) advisors with you to the branch office, so its better to talk to few of your friends about your interview and ask them whether they can come with you to the branch office if needed. Prepare your mind as the interviewer is surely going to ask to bring some advisors to the branch, it will not make you restless as you must be already prepared and you can do it as fast as never expected.

4. Salary Expectation-this is also a crucial point where you can be in or out, I mean to say try to avoid a fix figure about salary expectations in your first round interview, they can reject you on this ground only so better say a polished salary structure like: ‘As per the company norm or standard’, ‘30-40% hike’ (which is the most common hike given to the candidates) or you can also say ‘open for any reasonable offer’.
You can negotiate well in the final salary negotiation round with company HR manager, I always suggest candidates to show thier worth first then have your salary demand rather then getting rejected in the first round. If they are confident enough about your abilities then the company can negotiate well (keep in your mind generally its 30-40% hike only).

5. Interviewer can also ask for the business before joining, some candidates become uncomfortable to give any business before joining, but this is an another criteria to judge the perfect person and HR Manager gives offer letters once you show some business for the company.

6. Always try to reach in the first half of the day, HR managers are generally in good mood and also they will be present in the branch office, many times candidates are not able to give the interview as either HR managers are not present in the branch or busy in the meetings.

Over all in the first 10-15 secs we have to check the communication skills, sometimes we just start conversations and feel ‘no use’ because of the bad communication skills.
Other then this keep a note pad with you and make small notes about his company details, target assigned to him, what is the incentive structure and so on.
If he is already working in the insurance, ask him like
How many advisors you have in your team,
How many of them are active
How many policies you have given
How much business you have given
How much business you gave last month
Any contest you won in the company
How many new advisors you can give in the first month if you join other company
How much premium you can give
We have to take out the performer for our client, rather then sending the crowd its always better to send few candidates with the full confidence of their selection. Try to cross question him to know whether he is telling the fact or just exaggerating things.
Family background is also important to know about the circle of the candidate as per the profile we need such candidate who can recruit good advisors. Try to know more about the family members as discussed in the article for the job seekers.

Are you looking for a job switch over – yes, but other then insurance

Today recruiters are facing this problem at the most, we can’t force any one to join any company or sector but we can try for a while may be who knows……..!
What ever we are making notes of the details of the company as I suggested above can be used here, there are huge list of companies that it will turn to a thesis if we start writing the details of the companies but here what we have to do is, generally there are candidates from few companies we came across again and again, also if we talk about in a broader sense every vertical has its own trend like Pharmaceuticals, IT, FMCG, or Insurance, there performance appraisals, target or incentive structure and other criteria are quite similar we can keep this thing in mind and make notes from the candidate discussions, you must be wondering what is the use of all this home work in generating the leads for the interview.
Ya, it helps us in three ways first of all our own knowledge, while working in one vertical we collected the details about other companies and verticals which is really going to help us whenever we change the vertical as our base is already clear.
Secondly, when you are screening the candidate you can easily catch him if any time he lies about the company and his incentive details.
Thirdly and foremost use we want to make is after hearing straight ‘no’ we can spend few more seconds to discuss ‘why’, now the use of our knowledge starts from here. You can give him some better reasons to join your client as you have already made a ‘comparable chart’ in your mind about your client and his current profile, company and other factors especially incentives.
Other then this try to start working as soon as you get the openings for a location, suppose you get a mail from the company regarding any location with opening, take that location on the preference as we all use almost the same database from the portals, every candidate is getting many calls from different consultants but the candidates give preference to that consultant who called them for the first time,
If you get any interested candidate, drop a sms regarding the venue and never forget to mention your company name and your name in that sms. If the candidate is any how confused about your company name due to so many calls, you will miss a candidate
When all arms gone waste, now its time to ask ‘any reference’, this is also not an easy way to get names from that person expect ‘no, no one right now’ already we have lost one good candidate as he is not ready to switch over then try a punch, ooops…..chill dear
Its not that punch you really want put to some one especially to your senior who is pressurizing you to generate leads and on the other hand you are getting no, no, and no.
Yeah, put that frustration energy and design some good punch for the candidates like
‘Can you give me any name who is ready to take the challenges in the life’
‘Can you tell me any one is who is more know legible about it to approach’
‘Can you tell me anyone who is having more good circle or network’
oh! Really if the answer is still no then also you must be smiling some where inside as in the last you punched your ‘no’ candidate as he is not able to handle the challenges.
If that person is ready to give you some references but as he is in office he can’t so may be after some time. Ask him as ‘can I call u at 5.30 in the evening today’ rather then asking ‘when can I call you’, it will help you to get the exact time and date otherwise that person will answer you ‘call me after some time’ now you don’t have any specific time to call. If you will give him any time by yourself he will answer you ‘call me at 6.30’
Interview Tips
Job Seekers know what to wear, how to behave but still spend sometime on your candidate to discuss the questions HR Manager generally ask, what they want to hear for these questions, what are their preferences and also make your candidate aware of the criteria of the company (read the article for the job seekers, you will get some tips there also), as its better to make them mentally prepare for the interview candidates are going to handle. Give them tips about salary negotiation, how they will respond if HR manager ask for the business or advisors before giving the offer letter, let them know it’s a new trend while recruiting the Sales Managers.
Tracker / Follow UP
Already we are short of leads, the best way is to keep track of the candidates and roll over them for different companies in the same area. Send the same candidate in 2-3 companies, also maintain in the excel sheet that how many are not able to attend the interview on the specified date, roll over them with your follow up.
Follow up is very necessary to manage your leads, there are so many other consultants who are chasing the same candidate. After the getting the leads, drop the sms on phone instantly after the discussions and call your candidates in the morning not only to give the tips for the interview, also to remind them you are the same recruiter who spoke earlier and ask them to mention your company name on their resume every time in the end of your discussion.
Few more points you should know
(1) when can your candidate resign
(2) when he can join your client
(3) what is the last salary he can join if offered
(4) what is the main reason he wants to join your client
(5) will he be able to get advisors and business if asked before getting the offer letter
(6) from how long he is living in that area
(7) he is having four wheeler or not
(8) why he thinks he can do this job
(9) can he wait for the second round on the same day
these all questions will help you to know the mind set of the candidate and you can prepare him for the interview in a much better way.

This article is not related to my blog but i read this artice some where and found usefull for my friends who are fed up, just frustated or lost their interest and crawling in the life, i am, sure you will really feel better.

The feeling of emptiness and its cure

Why do you feel so hopeless that your life seems empty? I am bored and don’t like what I am doing. It’s the same again, my job, my relationship all seem so lifeless. I wish to die. What is this life about? These are all statements of helplessness, devoid of natural passion.

The following tips may be useful to make your life more interesting and thereby remove the emptiness that you feel.

1. Acquire a child like curiosity about life.
2. Pursue a hobby and try and learn as much as possible about it.
3. Spend your free time in community development without any expectations.
4. Take interest in other people and their happiness, howsoever small.
5. Smile and see how infectious it really is and how many people will open their hearts to you.
6. be charitable in your speech and actions.
7. Engage yourself in bettering your knowledge in fine arts or other related fields.
8. Play a game for the sake of the game and not for winning.
9. When wrong, apologize honestly.
10. Look at the sky and see its limitless expanse and potential.
11. See the dawn and the dusk and appreciate how naturally the world around us wakens and goes to sleep.
12. Appreciate nature.
13. Go to sleep wondering what you could do if you do wake up again.
14. Believe in the Almighty.
15. Say a prayer with your heart in it.

And finally and most importantly, you live life once, live it to its brim.

It is by no means difficult nor by any standard easy to change your thought process that has been long set. However, you can attain all the above points plus more, that you too can develop, thereby enriching your living.
